NEWCASTLE coach Brian Smith says the
Knights have solved a crucial part of theirrecruitment puzzle by securing Cronullahooker Isaac De Gois for the next three years. The 23-year-old Sharks dummy-half isNewcastle's first signing for 2009 and beyondand, though he will succeed NSW and formerAustralian captain Danny Buderus in the No.9jersey, he wants to establish his own identity. In an unusual twist, De Gois is also replacingformer Knight Terence Seu Seu, who will makehis Cronulla debut by relieving De Gois off thebench against the Tigers at Toyota Stadiumon Sunday."It's a big task, obviously," De Gois told TheHerald yesterday. "Danny Buderus is one ofthe best hookers to ever play the game, butI'm just going up there to concentrate onplaying my own game, try to improve and getbetter week in, week out."Now I can concentrate 100 per cent on theSharks for the rest of this year. I'm contractedto the Sharks until the end of the year andI want to play to the best of my ability andhopefully we can go all the way this year."By signing De Gois, Newcastle will notpursue former Knights junior Michael Ennis.Another player on their original short list,Tigers rake Stuart Flanagan, signed a three-yeardeal with Canberra this week.Smith said re-signing Kurt Gidley last monthuntil the end of 2011 and adding De Gois totheir roster meant the Knights could breatheeasier in their retention and recruitment drive."We've got our future captain and our likelycurrent Australian rep signed long-term, we'vegot a hooker now, we've got contenders inthe halfback positions, the basis of a goodforward pack for next year and a bevyof outside backs that are coming along,"Smith said."We're reasonably well placed now. There's not a great deal of urgencynow. There's perhaps a couple ofthings we'd like toadd to our squad fornext year, but we'renot under a greatdeal of pressureabout that anymorenow that we'vesigned a hooker."Full report insideLeague 2008,starts Page 37
